The National Chairman, Nigerian Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (NIEEE), Mr Gracious Omatseye, on Friday called on the Electricity Distribution Companies to engage professionals in executing their work.

Omatseye, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, urged the Discos to step up their employee recruitment standards.

According to him, only engineers from the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the NIEEE should be engaged by the Discos.

“Any electrical engineering personnel without the basic theoretical knowledge of circuit diagrams and trouble shooting, is a disaster. This is why most faults linger on, for a long time.

“Either by training or otherwise, they hardly know that regulations and safety of electrical installations supersede economic considerations,’’ he said.

The chairman said that the safety and the legal requirements of electrical/electronic installations should enhance long term economic advantages in electricity distribution.

“Of what use is cutting corners for an installation that will end up in fire or kill people,’’ he noted.

Omatseye, therefore, urged DISCOs to ensure that they evacuate all that was generated and allocated to them by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), so that electricity would be relatively available, nationwide.
