The National President of the Miners Association of Nigeria (MAN), Alhaji Sani Shehu, on Sunday urged the Federal Government to support small-scale miners with funds to grow the sector.

Shehu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the miners should also be supported with equipment to increase their mining production.

According to him, this assistance will be of enormous value to the development of the economy and the sector .

Shehu said, “Artisanal miners should be formalised and supported through the extension services of the relevant department in the Ministry of Solid Minerals.

“All funds earmarked for mining development should be identified and utilised for the puropse it is meant to serve.

“The miners should be able to access the Solid Minerals’ Development Fund to develop and finance the solid minerals’ sector in line with its statutory responsibility.’’

The national president also urged the government to continue to generate geological data and sell it to miners at a subsidised rate to enhance their jobs.

“The government should support miners to mine more industrial minerals as raw materials to our local industries.

“We should also stop importing raw materials that can be sourced locally,” Shehu said.
