The cholera death toll in Borno State has shot up to 21, as reported cases rises to 1,102 from eight Local Government Areas. Despite declaration of outbreak by the state Ministry of Health on September 5, 2018, cholera continues to spread to eight additional councils. Information Officer of United Nations (UN) Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN-OCHA), Abiodun Banire disclosed this in a statement released Friday in Maiduguri.

According to him, reported cases of cholera in the state increased to 213 between September 10 and 13, 2018. He explained that this represents fatality of 1.9 per cent.

Banire also noted: “Since the previous OCHA flash update of September 11, the number of cases has increased by 24 per cent. Jere, Magumeri and Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) remain the worst affected LGAs, largely due to poor water, sanitation and hygiene conditions in these areas that are also congested.
