The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin has said that the party would not change its name or transform into a new political party.

Jibrin was reacting to speculations that some of the members may seek alliance with other political parties. The PDP BoT chair, who spoke at a press conference yesterday in Kaduna, denied speculations that members of the opposition party were planning to form a new party and dump PDP.

According to him, there was no plan to dump the PDP, adding that every organ of the party is working to strengthen the party to enable it to play its role effectively as an opposition party.

Jibrin, a Second Republic senator stated: “There is no plan to dump PDP as it was never discussed. If we do that, posterity will not forgive us because PDP is already a household name dearly loved by every household in Nigeria.”

According to the BoT chair, “Posterity will judge any one who is nursing the ambition to kill PDP over his personal ambition. This will be contrary to the hard work of our founding fathers and mothers who worked so hard to produce the brand PDP.”

Giving reasons why the PDP would remain a formidable force, the BoT Chairman argued: “Changing its name and brand will be a disaster for Nigeria’s political development, especially when reckoning with the hard work and foresight of our founding fathers that came up with the brand name, PDP, which is fully accepted by Nigerians.”

Meanwhile, former President Goodluck Jonathan has said that Nigeria witnessed 16 years of uninterrupted democracy under the PDP.Jonathan disclosed at the public presentation of the book titled Woman in Parliament: Chronicle of Akande-Adeola, Nigeria’s First Female Parliament Leader in Abuja at the weekend.

According to him: “Our party did not just sustain 16 years of uninterrupted democracy, our stewardship produced the first female speaker in this country. Our stewardship and leadership produced the first woman Majority Leader of the House of Representatives in Mulikat Akande-Adeola.

“Our stewardship also produced the female acting governors in many states. The same 16 years of uninterrupted democracy also produced the likes of Yakubu Dogara, because without PDP, he wouldn’t be here today.”

The former President who was represented by former Minister of National Planning, Suleiman Abubakar, said Mulikat Akande-Adeola deserved massive commendations as a trust-worthy woman.

In her remarks, Akande-Adeola said that the book, which chronicles her parliamentary experience, would inspire many students not to be overwhelmed by any situation.
