THE Abia State Government has confirmed that, at least, one person died in Friday morning’s tanker Fire incident, which occurred along the Aba-Owerri Road, while some others sustained injuries.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, represented by his deputy, Ude Oko Chukwu, who visited the scene of the fire incident at the weekend, commiserated with the victims and those whose property were gutted by fire.

The governor, according to his deputy, described the incident as unfortunate and pathetic and expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the victims, particularly the family of the woman who died in the inferno.

He pledged official support to cushion the effect of the tragedy but reprimanded tanker drivers and those conveying inflammable products along major roads for being careless.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Godwin Adindu, in a statement, warned that government would no longer tolerate the damage done by such drivers, saying carelessness has far-reaching implication on life and property.

According to him, the governor has directed that all security agencies and regulatory bodies should conduct regular checks on roads to ascertain the worthiness of heavy-duty vehicles on the highways and ensure that all offenders are brought to book.

He added that the governor further urged Aba residents and all others in the state to cooperate with traffic officials, whose duty is to regulate and direct traffic flow.
