Piqued by the allegation of financial inducement at polling units, the candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP), Mrs. Olamide Falana, has warned against it at the November polls.

In a statement in Akure yesterday, she described financial inducement as a “Transactional Voting System,” which is fast becoming a negative culture in elections.

The candidate attributed the open buying of votes at polling units to the prevalence of poverty in the country.

Falana said: “This negative culture has found its root in the prevailing poverty of the people who have been impoverished by bad leadership and poor economic policies in the three tiers of government.

“This practice is negative and unsustainable. If allowed to continue, it would make the people to be at the mercy of moneybags, whose only interest is to attain power and neglect the welfare of the electorate.

According to her, the system has become a norm among the political parties and urged the people to reject it to make the upcoming elections credible.

She said: “The youth must realise that this politics of exclusion is a deliberate plot to take leadership away from the more purposeful and determined youths.”

The DPP candidate urged stakeholders to rise against the system no matter the status of those involved.

“All well-meaning indigenes of the state, religious and academic institutions, as well as the traditional leaders should warn their people against collecting money and other incentives in exchange for their votes.

“The people must be allowed to vote according to their conscience to have the opportunity to demand good governance from the candidates if elected,” she said.
