The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says over 35,000 new voters have been registered in Ekiti State during the ongoing continuous registration exercise.

A statement by its Administrative Secretary, Dr. Muslim Omoleke, said “a total number of 35,909 eligible voters, comprising 18,193 males and 17,716 females, have been registered as at June 29 this year. The exercise commenced on April 27 in the state.”

He noted that 4,154 registered voters “are seeking transfer of voting rights to new locations from within and outside the state.”

The commission stated that 1,048 permanent voter cards (PVCs) had been distributed in the state, adding that “six new registration centres have been allocated based on returns and agitation for more centres to ease the process.”

INEC commended the people for their cooperation “in ensuring a smooth conduct of the exercise” and restated its commitment for professionalism.

According to the agency, the new registration centres include St. Michael’s Primary School, Ajilosun, Ado Ekiti for Ado Ekiti Local Council; Health Centre, Omuo-Ekiti for Ekiti East and CAC Primary School, Ipoti-Ekiti to cater for people in Ijero council area.

The rest are Post Office building, Ikere-Ekiti for Ikere council; LA Primary School, Ikosu for Moba and St. John Anglican Primary School, Ilupeju for Oye area councils.

It also implored other eligible voters to visit other designated registration centres in their respective local councils to register, saying “they should bear it in mind that it is criminal and punishable under the law to register more than once.”
