Women have been called upon to, as a matter of urgency, embrace Information and Communications Technology (ICT) if they must remain relevant in the 21st Century.

Women have been called upon to, as a matter of urgency, embrace Information and Communications Technology (ICT) if they must remain relevant in the 21st Century.

This was part of the discussions of leading business women entrepreneurs at the weekend during the Tour of Tech event by Ingressive to promote investment and advisory in the Nigerian tech industry in Lagos.

Analysts were upbeat about the possibilities the tour holds for the country. They believed that Nigeria is not just a consumer of technology, but has become, over the last few years, a country where a youthful population has begun to use technology to create solutions to problems in their society.

Speaking with The Guardian, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ingressive, Maya Horgan-Famodu, said the programme holds yearly and centred on bringing entrepreneurs across the globe to discuss developments around them.

“This year, we brought women that are leading lights in their domain to come and speak on how the technology ecosystem in the country can be further energised.

“We have come to realise that it has become crucial for women to see technology as an opportunity to develop. The challenge is not that the female folks lack competence or they are not educated. What we see as a major challenge is the ability to market their stuffs, which was part of our discussion,” she stated.

Founder, RSVP, a restaurant, Mrs. Maya Halabi, said for the female-folks to move up the ladder, there is need for collaboration among different women from diverse industries to share ideas, aspirations with technology in mind.

According to Halabi, the challenge of dominance by the men-folk is not limited to technology space alone, saying: “This gap cuts across all sectors. But we see that with technology, the female-folks can really come out and compete favourably and rise to influential positions.

“In business, networking is critical, which allows for flow of information, among others, that allows you to progress even across sectors.”

Also, Ayotunde Owoigbe of Banwo and Ighodalo, a law firm, said the challenge of male dominance is not limited to the technology space.

“This is everywhere even in FMCG fields. But the call now has been that women too must come out of their shell and prove their capabilities.

“We need more women in the tech space. Though some are there already. Women must come out to connect and innovate if they must be relevant,” she stressed.
