Barely two days after staff of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) protested against proposed replacement of its managing director, Atiku Abubakar, the Federal Government has approved the appointment of Usman Gur Mohammed as its interim Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer for a period of 12 months.

The TCN, under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association and Allied Electricity Companies (SSAAEC) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), had on Wednesday disrupted office activities, protested against the alleged attempt by the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, to remove Abubakar.

The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Louis Edozien, conveyed Mohammed’s appointment yesterday through a press statement.

He said Mohammed comes with a clear mandate to review, validate and implement the best management structure, strategy, business plan and processes to take TCN, both TSP and ISO, to the next level of operational effectiveness.

“Mohammed has resumed duty with a 12-month non-extendable deadline to complete his transformational mandate and set Transmission Service Providers (TSP) and Independent Systems Operator (ISO) on a path of greater operational efficiency and effectiveness and enhanced responsiveness to the needs of the generation companies and distribution companies, who are TCN’s customers,” he added.

He recalled that between 2012 and last year, Manitoba Hydro International of Canada ran TCN as a management contractor, noting that the exit of Manitoba necessitated the new appointment.

Mohammed was until his appointment, the Principal Power Utility Transformation Specialist in the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Nigeria Country Department.

As the ISO, TCN monitors and controls the national grid and when and how the power stations, which are owned by different companies, can supply electricity for delivery to distribution companies in the safe and orderly way and charges the distribution companies for these services.
