Rumbles in Ekiti over election of delegates

A former Deputy National Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and one of the contestants for the party’s national chairmanship position, Chief Olabode George, has called for immediate resignation of the Chairman, Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi.

In a statement yesterday, the Director-General, Bode George Campaign Organisation (BGCO), Alhaji Ibrahim K. Aliu (OFR), said it is increasingly disturbing and rather untidy the role Makarfi is currently playing in the process towards the party’s convention scheduled for December 9, 2017.

The BGCO, which insisted that Makarfi could no longer play the role of a neutral arbiter who stands far above the fray, said that the caretaker committee chairman is already soiled in the muddy waters of partisan prejudice.

However, the spokesman of the PDP, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye, said the national headquarters of the party is yet to see Bode George’s petition or statement. He said: “Immediately we get it, we shall deliberate on it and take a position.”

In another development, some PDP stakeholders in Ekiti State have accused Governor Ayodele Fayose of violating the party’s guidelines and the constitution by allegedly compiling the names of his stooges and imposing them as ‘elected delegates’ from the ward congress conducted last Saturday for the December convention.

The aggrieved stakeholders, in a petition addressed to the Ekiti State PDP Ward Appeal Panel yesterday, urged members of the panel to disregard the list of national delegates that may emerge from the local council congress held yesterday, November 21, 2017.

They said that the development had sparked tension in Ekiti PDP and provoked majority of the party faithful who looked forward to a free, fair and credible congress to elect delegates expected to vote at the convention.

The petition was signed by a Board of Trustees (BoT) member, Chief Clement Awoyelu; senator representing Ekiti Central, Mrs. Fatimat Raji Rasaki and House of Representatives member representing Ekiti Central Federal Constituency II, Mr. Olamide Oni.

Others include former House of Representatives members, Mrs. Titilayo Akindahunsi and Mr. Olufemi Adeyemi; Mrs. Titilayo Oluwatuyi, Dr. Kunle Folayan, Chief Williams Ajayi and Mr. Fatai Ibraheem.

The PDP Publicity Secretary in Ekiti State, Mr. Jackson Adebayo, dismissed the petition as a ruse and a mischief of the highest order.Adebayo, who stated that valid ward congress was held, said: “The action of the disgruntled elements against an organised house will not stand.”
