Government sets up panel on herdsmen, farmers conflict

The Federal Government has set up a committee to proffer solutions to herdsmen’s and farmers’ conflicts all over the country.The technical committee is headed by the Director-General, Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Prof Oshita O. Oshita. According to the terms of reference, the panel is expected to identify the problems responsible for the conflicts from regional and national perspectives.

It would also make an overview of past investigations including those already implemented as well as highlight the successes and challenges of each.The committee is also expected to outline a tentative strategy to deal with the conflicts.

Oshita, who commended the Federal Government for the appointment, stated that the formation of the committee was a demonstration of the genuine desire of the present administration to ensure a more peaceful and secure country for the citizenry.

He urged every Nigerian to make useful contributions and support the Federal Government for general progress and better conditions of living.He also urged all to embrace peace as the primary law of peaceful co-existence.Oshita stressed the strategic role of the media and called for a more conflict-sensitive reportage of events.
