THE Igbo community in Benin City, Edo State has denied the existence of Eze Ndigbo title in Benin, claiming that the Benin monarch remains the traditional head of everybody and communities in the kingdom.

This position was made known during the inauguration of a-10 member caretaker committee to run the affairs of the union until election is conducted. The committee has Professor Nat Anjekwu as chairman and Ofoedu Emma as Secretary.
Reacting to a Benin High Court ruling in November 2015, that ordered the Edo Commissioner of Police to prevent one Chief Luke Abbas from being installed as Eze Ndigbo in Benin Kingdom, a leader of the union, Chief G. Igbokwe, said the union signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2006, where members resolved on how the union would be led by an executive that would emerge by consensus and that the life of every tenure would last for three years.

He expressed shock that a one-man leadership has been imposed, which led to the attempt to install an Ndigbo.
He said one of the resolutions then was that; “The President General shall not adopt the name or allow himself to be called or addressed as Eze-Igbo or Eze Ndi Igbo.”

Igbokwe also lamented that the name of the association has been used for political, religious and other reasons different from what the MoU stated and therefore urged the new leadership to abide by the contents of the MoU.

It would be recalled that Justice A. Edodo-Eruaga gave the order following an exparte motion filed by Chief Fecus Ezekwere and two others on behalf of Igbo Community Union in Benin City.

In the High Court enrolment order, the Judge granted the interim injunction restraining Abbas from presenting himself to Eze Nwosu Ibe for installation as Eze Ndigbo in Benin, Edo State.
The Judge also restrained Ibe and his agents from installing Abbas as Eze Ndigbo of Edo State, pending the determination of the motion on notice.
