Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has declared August 15 and 16 work-free days to enable the residents to register and collect their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).

The governor might have been disturbed by the low response to voter registration and collection of PVCs in the 27 councils of the state.

Addressing journalists yesterday evening at Douglas House, Owerri, Okorocha also directed that markets be closed till 4pm during the holiday.

Meanwhile, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Francis Ezeonu, met with stakeholders in the electoral process at the De Range Hotels, Owerri, same day, soliciting their views on how to ensure enhanced interest in voter registration.

He regretted that over 435,000 PVCs were yet to be collected in the state as at July 13, despite all publicity and appeals by the commission, the media and other partners. He promised to put necessary structures in place for next year’s election.

In clearer terms, Okorocha disclosed that the officials of the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies, would collaborate with officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure smooth compliance to the directive.

He noted the need to work in accordance with the August 17 deadline for the registration.
