A director with the Kogi State Pensions Board, who was suspended by Governor Yahaya Bello in 2016, Alphonsus Ameh, 61, has died of heart attack. One of the deceased nieces said Ameh was among the directors and permanent secretaries who were suspended in February 2016 by the state government. She revealed that Ameh, a grade level 16 officer of the board, had not been paid any salary since his suspension two years ago.

The source added that the 61-year-old civil servant, who received his sack letter on Friday, December 29, 2017, died in the early hours of yesterday of high blood pressure at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Lokoja, the state capital. An officer of the Kogi State government had died last year in similar circumstances, a development that drew wide condemnation from the public.

Ameh died three days after receiving a sack letter from the Kogi State government. He was among the directors that were suspended by the state government at the outset of Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration in 2016. He was Director of Administration and Finance (DAF) in the Kogi State Pensions Board.

The deceased, who hailed from Ade Community in Olamaboro Local Council of the state, resided in Lokoja. The state government under Bello had embarked on civil service reforms, which also provided for staff screening and verification exercises. Before embarking on the exercise, directors and permanent secretaries were suspended.

Meanwhile, the Ondo State governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) has said training and retraining of workers for optimum service delivery would be the focal drive of his administration. He said this while addressing civil servants yesterday in Akure to set a direction for the new year, urging them to prepare to update their knowledge for better service delivery.

The governor, who praised the workers for showing understanding and cooperating with his administration from inception, solicited their continued support and rededication to duty.Akeredolu added that the people’s welfare would be the central focus of his government’s plans and the extent to which they were met would form the yardstick for measuring the achievements of his administration.

While urging those who desire progress for the state to prepare to make sacrifices, he assured that every segment of the state would feel the impact of his administration.
