A 25-year-old labourer, on Thursday, appeared in a senior magistrates’ court in Katsina State for allegedly raping a minor.

The labourer, who resides at Barhin quarters of Katsina, appeared before Senior Magistrate, Nafisa Bagiwa, on a one-count charge of rape.

The prosecutor, Insp. Hashimu Musa, told the court that the matter was reported by one Fatima Adamu at the Sabon-Gari Police Station on May 12, the same date the accused raped her five-year-old daughter.

He said that on the fateful date, the complainant discovered that her daughter’s private part was swollen and upon further inquiry, the girl said one man lured her into an uncompleted building at about 11.30 a.m. and had carnal knowledge of her.

He added that the victim said she could identify the person that raped her and when she was taken to a project site where the accused work, the girl identified him.

He noted that the police were still investigating the matter.

Consequently, the accused confessed to have committed the offence, contrary to section 283 of the penal code.

The senior magistrate then ordered that the case file be forwarded to the state’s Ministry of Justice for advice on the matter.

Bagiwa said that the court would not enter his plea as he was only arraigned for the purpose of cognisance only.

She then ordered that the accused be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the matter to June 24 for continuation of hearing.
