The Lagos State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has dismissed the allegations that the former Presiding Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ, The Light in Alausa, Ven. Femi Taiwo was wrongfully terminated.

Chairman of CAN in Lagos, Alexander Bamgbola said at a press briefing yesterday that the church has been under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs and that Taiwo was employed by the state government that has the right to dispense with his services if it so wished.

“Taiwo, like any other employee of the government is subject to the terms and conditions of service.
The government, therefore, acted within its constitutional authority to terminate his services.

“The Presiding Chaplain and the Deputy Chaplain are officers of the Church employed by the state government,” he explained.

Bamgbola said the media was over-flogging the issue that wife of the Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode terminated Taiwo’s appointment for not according her respect during a service.

“Deacon Bolanle Ambode is a God fearing woman. The error of judgment pronounced on her and the Lagos State government over the incident that took place at the Chapel of Christ, The Light by social media was aimed at creating enmity between the Church and state government.

“We implore the media to leave the matter for the Church to handle because hitherto, there has been peaceful co-existence between the Church and the government,” he said.

Bamgbola added that the Church asked for a Christian governor and the request was granted.

“It would be preposterous for the Church to carry placard and be fighting against a government that has been very friendly with the Church and even went as far as refurbishing the Chapel,” he said.

He therefore, asked the media to always get their facts right before going to the press and urged that the matter be allowed to rest as CAN has stepped into it to ensure the existing peaceful co-existence between the Church and the state government continues.
