The Lagos government has approved the construction of a flyover at the Fagba axis of the state to ease traffic.

During an inspection of the ongoing Pen Cinema Flyover Bridge, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode stressed the need to frontally address the traffic gridlock on the Agege-Iju axis to make the facility more effective.

The development, he noted, was in response to the yearnings of residents and commuters as well as the resolve of his administration to ensure free flow of traffic and reduction of man-hour loss statewide.

The governor said the flyover, when completed, would improve socio-economic activities, development and safety of road users as well as improve the standards of living of residents.

Also yesterday, the state government increased the budgetary provision for housing loans for its workers from N50 million to N100 million in order to improve their welfare.

The Head of Service, Mrs. Folashade Adesoye, disclosed this at a ministerial briefing in Ikeja to mark the third anniversary of the current administration.

According to her, the Staff Housing Board had disbursed loans to 280 public servants amounting to N95, 033, 564.

She said: “I am extremely delighted to inform you that the budgetary provision for housing loans has increased from N50 to N100 million, laying credence to government’s commitment to staff welfare.”

Adesoye pointed out that there were 40 buses in the fleet of the centralised staff transport system.

“However, owing to the increasing number of staff and the opening up of new residential areas, there is a conspicuous deficit in the number of buses. But Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has promised to re-fleet the scheme with state –of – the art buses,” she added.

Adesoye added that the welfare of the bus drivers was being improved with regular medical check-ups and exposure to good healthcare facilities.

“In a bid to develop a world-class public service where staff have the right attitude, government has initiated issuance of letters of commendation to officers identified to have consistently met or exceeded set targets and exhibited exceptional work ethics and diligence in the discharge of their duties,’’ the senior government official further said.
