Lagos State government through its agency, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) in partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced the call for applications into its Employability Support Project (ESP).

According to the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF), Akintunde Oyebode, the Lagos State Employability Support Project (LSESP) provides short vocational training programs implemented by LSETF to provide youths in the state with industry relevant skills that could help them gain possible employment and advance in life.

He emphasized the importance of the project in building a skilled and experienced workforce for organisations and businesses in the state and also improving the lives of the citizens. He stated that the application is open to residents of the State between ages 18 – 35 years.

“With focused training of applicants and revamp of vocational studies in Lagos State, we are confident that this initiative will go a long way to address unemployment among youths in Lagos State. These trainings will also address capacity building and job demands in both private and public sectors,” he said.

Oyebode also explained that the Fund has the mandate to directly invest N25Billion in helping Lagos residents grow and scale their Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) or acquire skills to get better jobs.

“LSETF focus is on promoting entrepreneurship by improving access to finance, strengthening the institutional capacity of MSMEs and formulating policies designed to improve the business environment in Lagos State.

“The Fund expects to create 300,000 (Three Hundred Thousand) direct and 600,000 (Six Hundred Thousand) indirect jobs within three years, by supporting at least 100,000 (One Hundred Thousand) MSMEs,” Oyebode stated.

Speaking on this initiative, the Team Leader, Inclusive Growth Unit, UNDP, Robert Asogwa said, “this is a major step for development in Lagos and Africa by extension. It is the most reliable means of eradicating unemployment in Lagos state, and the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) is proud to be a partner of great initiative.”

While trainings are completely free, applicants are required to show proof of their residence in Lagos State by providing their Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) number.

To register for the training and skills acquisition courses, which will be provided by selected Vocational Training Centres in the state and implemented by Arc Skills, a globally recognised skills training provider applicants are also expected to have successfully completed Junior Secondary School.
