Ava Nwazue, an engineer based in Owerri, Imo State, was on his way to a bank along Port Harcourt Road, Owerri when he met a young girl lying at the bank’s pedestrian entrance.

The 14-year-old Favour was not a strange sight on the road. Dressed in tattered clothes, riddled with marks and boils on her skin, the weak teen reached out to passerby on the street to take her to a hospital. “Please I am sick, take me to a hospital,” she begged.

It was in this state that Nwazue saw her. Upon interrogation, he learnt that Favour was an orphan. Moved by compassion, he took her to the nearest clinic but was denied admission because there was no doctor present to attend to them.

In desperation to ensure she did not sleep out late that night, Nwazue took her home. With the help of his sister, he cleaned her and continued his quest to get her medical care the following day.

Several days after he picked her up, luck shined on them when a doctor at the fourth hospital advised him to go to another hospital, which eventually accepted her. While registering the girl, he was told in confidence that she was not new to the hospital.

It was also disclosed that two NGOs had taken up her case but used it as a money-making venture, returning her to the streets every night at the bank’s entrance and picking her up in the morning.

Much to Nwazue’s surprise, the 14-year-old was HIV positive, had tuberculosis, pneumonia, malaria and typhoid. However, they gave conditions of her admission but Nwazue must provide a caregiver.

Nwazue is therefore soliciting for the help of Nigerians who are willing to cover her medical costs. He also hopes that she will be adopted and properly cared for.
