A suspected mentally-deranged middle-aged man has been apprehended in connection with the recent serial attacks on families in Ogawshi-uku Delta state.

The suspected arsonist was nabbed by the community’s vigilance group, along Ubulu-nor Road axis with a gallon of petrol, matches and other objects. He was handed over to the police.

A police source said that the suspect had refused to own up to the attack.

The arrest was made not too far from the house of one of the victims of the fuel attack, Pastor Sydney Nwinga, of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

Nwinga died along with two of his children at University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu where he was receiving treatment.

The source said the police had decided to keep him to establish whether he was the person, who poured fuel through the victims’ windows before setting the rooms ablaze.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andy Aniamaka, who confirmed the arrest, said investigation was ongoing to confirm the suspect’s mental health.
