In a coordinated ground and aerial “Thunder Strike 2” operation, the Nigerian Air Task Force (NATF) has destroyed terrorists’ hideouts, killing some of the hoodlums, in Borno State.

In a coordinated ground and aerial “Thunder Strike 2” operation, the Nigerian Air Task Force (NATF) has destroyed terrorists’ hideouts, killing some of the hoodlums, in Borno State.

The joint military operations, according to NAF’s spokesman, Air Commodore Ibikunle Daramola, yesterday in a statement in Maiduguri, was a renewed onslaught against Boko Haram terrorists in the Northeast.

He said the latest move against the terrorists commenced with the launch of the Operation Thunder Strike 2 in the region, comprising Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states.

He explained that the operation was an independent air interdiction targeting selected Boko Haram terrorists’ locations within the fringes of the Lake Chad and Sambisa Forest in Borno State.

“This is with a view to further degrading the remnants of the insurgents, curtailing their freedom of action and denying them bases from which they could launch attacks against our ground troops’ locations.

“On day two of the operation, September 4, air strikes by NAF aircraft resulted in the destruction of Boko Haram terrorists’ hideouts and neutralization of scores of insurgents at three locations.”

According to him, the terrorists were neutralised at Tumbun Rego, Sabon Tumbun and Tumbun Allura, located on the fringes of the Lake Chad.

Tumbun Rego, 140 kilometres Northeast of Maiduguri, has been identified as a major logistics/communications base of the insurgents. They use the town as their main staging area for surveillance and attacks.

On destruction of hideous, Daramola said: “The ATF detailed F-7Ni and Alpha
Jet aircraft to attack the identified Boko Haram terrorists’ logistics/communications hubs. A number of solar panels were spotted and destroyed during the attack.”

According to the spokesman, the attack on Sabon Tumbun was undertaken based on human intelligence reports which were later confirmed following
several days of Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions which confirmed that the settlement was a Boko Haram terrorists’
tactical operations base.”

The settlement also had some equipment and vehicles cleverly concealed under thick foliage. It was attacked in successive waves of
strikes by Alpha Jet, F-7Ni and Mi-35M helicopter gunships.

Similarly, spokesman of the Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Texas Chukwu, said Boko Haram terrorists were killed in Gesada village, during clearance operations in Guzamala/Mobbar area of Borno State.

In a statement yesterday in Maiduguri, Chukwu said that 147 rustled animals were also recovered and returned to their owners.

According to him, two A-K 47 riffles were also recovered.
