Houses destroyed, vehicles torched in Lagos cult clash

FIGHT broke out last Monday between two warring groups in Okeleye Afariogun Street in Oshodi, Lagos during a naming ceremony around 6:30pm. The area, which is known for violence, witnessed one the worst attacks in recent times as the two warring factions battled for supremacy.

   According to a source, the fight began as child’s play between children before some youths were said to have taken over the fight after a boy was stabbed with bottle in his stomach and was immediately rushed to an undisclosed hospital.

   A reliable source, who did not want his in name in print, told The Guardian that the ceremony kicked off at 5:30pm with funfair as it attracted a lot of people in the neighbourhood due to the man’s friendliness in the community.

   ‘’The fight was between two cult groups. The faction arrived the area some minutes after the event started and on sighting their rivalry, began to break bottles and stabbed each other.

   A policeman, who was in the only hotel in the area, said he narrowly escaped being hurt when some miscreants came into the hotel to attack the people there with acid and other dangerous weapons. He added that his car was severely vandalised.

   Business owners in the area are still counting their losses as several shops were destroyed and many vehicles destroyed. An unconfirmed source said five people died while several people sustained various degrees of injuries. 

   Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) was at the scene to salvage the situation from Monday night to the early hour of Tuesday.
