Institute confers honorary award on risk manager

IN recognition of her contributions to risk management in the country and the world over, the Institute of Loan and Risk Management of Nigeria at the weekend honoured an outstanding risk manager in the country.

  Conferring the Honourary Fellowship Award of the Chartered Institute of Loan and Risk Management of Nigeria on the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, H.Pierson Associates Limited and the Regional Director, Global Association of Risk Professional, New York- USA, Mrs. Eileen C. Shaiyen, in Lagos, President/Chairman of Council of the institute (former Commissioner, National Insurance Commission), Chief Oladipo Abiodun Bailey, noted that Mrs. Shaiyen has special passion for risk management.

  Mrs. Shaiyen, while expressing joy for the award, said that she appreciated the job the institute was doing in the area of risk management training, especially in other African countries. Noting, however, that the issue of risk management rests with knowledge and culture, Shaiyen added that this would enhance the understanding of people in the area of managing risks and help them to impact on the various organisations risk managers find themselves and the country at large. 

  Bailey, who said that the induction was done for an outstanding female risk manager, added that Shaiyen represented regional director of risk managers in Africa. He advised that Nigerians should educate themselves and get their leaders to accept the culture of risk management.    

  While berating the Nigerian governments for not placing value on risk management, the institute’s boss urged them to make use of qualified risk managers to advise them on how to manage risks in various strata of the society.

  While commending the risk institute for the great honour done her, Mrs. Shaiyen thanked them for finding her worthy of the honour, which would propel her to do more, adding that the institute is a unique one that focuses on risk management and that the world of risks borrows a lot from the insurance sector.
