THE military has arrested three suspects in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, for snatching six laptops belonging to  the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from the commission’s ad hoc staff in Jere Council who were conducting the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) and distribution of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) exercises in the state.

The arrest, according to a military source Friday, followed an intelligence report from affected INEC staff that six registration laptops were on Thursday night snatched from them by some unknown persons in Jere polling units.

“We have arrested the suspects in two different locations of Maiduguri and they are being detained for further interrogations and investigation on the motives behind their act,” said the military source  who pleaded anonymity, as he was not authorized to speak on the matter.

Confirming the incident, an INEC senior official in charge of Logistics and Monitoring, said the security agents were on top of the situation. “Our staff and other ad hoc personnel for this exercise are vigilant on the desperations of some politicians to acquire PVCs for February 14 and 28 elections in this state.

“I cannot give you any information about these agents of politicians in Borno, but I assure you that we were able to nip the problem in the bud to conduct credible, free and fair elections next month, despite the hitches on our ongoing CVR and PVCs,” he stated.
