Ogun teachers call off strike

THE striking Ogun State teachers Wednesday called off their two- week-old strike following the outcome of a meeting held between the teachers union’s leadership and government delegation.

The call-off was announced jointly by Dare Ilekoya (Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers) and Akeem Lasisi (Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools of Nigeria) after a congress of the two bodies held at the NUT Hall, Abeokuta.

Ilekoya, who spoke on behalf of the teachers, stated: “We are here today to tell the public that government has decided to call us for discussions, we met and all our issues were looked into.”

He said government also agreed to pay the October deductions with immediate effect while outstandings will subsequently be paid through improved Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR).

Ilekoya added that government had agreed to set up committee that would involve all parties to review other outstanding issues.”

“On this note, we hereby announce the suspension of the industrial action embarked upon by teachers in the state”, the NUT chairman said.
