SUSPECTED hoodlums Thursday attacked the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat and destroyed several vehicles in Taraba State during the visit of President Goodluck Jonathan to the state.

The aggrieved youths, according some security personnel keeping vigil at the secretariat located along Barde Way, stormed the premises when President Jonathan and his entourage were busy campaigning at the stadium located at the outskirts of Jalingo metropolis.

One of the security personnel, who spoke with The Guardian, said the youths, numbering over one hundred, took them by surprise thereby destroying over 10 vehicles belonging to members of staff of the party.

As at the time of filing this report, heavily armed security personnel were seen to have taken over the premises of the secretariat.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the party, Napoleon Adamu, said that in spite of the Abuja Accord signed by all the candidates seeking for the number one position in the country, some disgruntled elements of “some political parties can still go as far as attacking members of the ruling party.”

Alleging that the attackers were members of the opposition party, he told The Guardian that the attack was carried out “when we were in the stadium.”

Pleased that no life was lost in the attack, he admonished the teeming supporters of the party not to take the law into their hands, as security operatives, according to him, would soon fish out the perpetrators “of this act.”

Another chieftain of the party, who was not certain where the attackers emanated from, told The Guardian that several threats were issued out by various youth groups of the party (PDP) “a day before the arrival of the President.”

The youths, he said, had been complaining that they were not carried along by the committees constituted for the visit of the President.”

He said: “Though our consolation lies on what we were told by the security personnel, but at the same time, we cannot rule out the fact that the attack must have been perpetrated by our PDP youths because they have earlier issued out threat that if their demands are not meant, that would disrupt the visit of Mr. President.”

Meanwhile, the APC chairman in the state, Alhaji Hassan Jika Ardo, denied the party’s involvement in the vandalisation, stating that “we are just coming into Jalingo from our campaign.
