• Teachers allege arbitrary retirement, petition Delta governor

Sharing of information between security agencies operating in Delta State has assisted in checking criminal activities, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, has said.

Speaking when the Commandant, 4th Battalion of the Nigerian Army, Brig.-General Banbella Raji, paid him a courtesy call in Asaba, the state capital yesterday, Okowa observed that the synergy between the agencies has recorded success in crime prevention.

According to the governor: “I have always called for collaborative efforts between security agencies operating in the state and I am happy to say that this, especially in the area of information sharing is working to the benefits of the agencies and the people of the state.”

He commended the army for collaborating with the police to curb crime.

Earlier, Brig.-Gen Raji commended Governor Okowa’s administration for supporting the security agencies, which he said has led to improvement in the socio-economic life of people of the state, adding that they were in the state to check the activities of militants, pipeline vandals and kidnappers.

Meanwhile, alleging an arbitrary retirement of teachers, retired primary school teachers in Ika North East Local Council of Delta State yesterday petitioned Governor Okowa, asking him to intervene and stop this practice.

A petition dated July 30, 2016, addressed to the governor, a copy of which was made available to this reporter, said the retirement was done without due process.

But reacting to the allegation, Chairman of the local council, Eboka Francis, said the affected teachers were retired because of old age.

The petition signed by Mrs. Rosemary Okeh, and Mr. Paul Igbinoba, said: “There is foul play in the retirement exercise as no letter was given to us since February this year, names of the retired teachers were only displayed on the notice board at the Local Education Authority (LEA) office, Owa-Oyibu. No reasons were however stated for the retirement.”
