A former military governor of the defunct Cross River State, Major-Gen. Paul Ufuoma Omu has said that the clashes between Enwhe and Igbide, two Isoko communities in Delta State, arose because they have common boundaries just like other communities around them.

Speaking in Igbide, his hometown, the former Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC) chief noted that boundaries could ignite disagreements and misunderstanding due to closeness of communities.

He said for many years, land fragmentation agitation has been a long standing issue, but the recent crisis between Igbide and Enwhe was caused by youths and encroachment.

Omu, 77, condemned fighting over a farmland as senseless as land is transferable from one generation to another.

The elder statesman noted that the two communities have resolved to dialogue for peace as external settlement by government and other organizations may not be lasting compared to direct talks between the two communities.

He said even hunters are not allowed into the farm and forest, Omu said, stressing that several meetings have been held in Warri and progress made.

Seven dialogue sessions have been held and successful resolutions reached, he added.
