No fewer than 2,000 prospective immigration officers, whose training were suspended shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office last year, has staged a protest at the office of the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.

The prospective officers were almost done with their training and about to resume work as immigration officers when the president ordered that their recruitment be suspended.

The process for their recruitment was started by the last administration in 2014, but after the failure of the exercise, which led to the death of over 20 applicants, another recruitment was initiated on February 9, 2015.

Over one million Nigerians applied, but 48,747 were shortlisted from which 2,000 including 1,457 males and 543 females were offered provisional appointments on May 22, 2015. However, the training of those shortlisted was suspended in August last year.

Immigration spokesman, King Ekpedeme, a Deputy Comptroller of Immigration (DCI), told The Guardian on telephone yesterday that it is not an immigration issue.

According to him, “we are aware of the protest but their protest is to the Ministry of Interior. They went there but were not at our office.”
