Officials of the Industrial Court sitting in Makurdi, Benue State as well as security operatives for several hours yesterday disrupted the activities of First Bank Plc located on New Otukpo Road in a bid to enforce a judgment. The development left several customers stranded.

They were shut out from 8:30 a.m. to12 noon, a development which raised fears that the financial institution might be facing financial challenges as they left un-briefed.

The Guardian learnt that the court had asked the bank to pay N12.4 million as damages to one Ruth Amelia Adah, a former employee, for wrongful dismissal.

In the July 12, 2017 ruling, the financial institution was given up to October 16 to effect the payment, which never came to be.

Apparently irked by disobedience, the court officials and policemen flooded the bank premises as early as 8:30 a.m., pasting the order on the vehicles in the vicinity and impounding them.

To show seriousness, they came with a tow van and a crane for the enforcement.

Attempts to dismantle the generating set that powers the bank for full crippling of its operation were resisted, leading to a shouting match among the parties. Tempers rose to a point where there was almost an exchange of fists.

Counsel to the bank and the plaintiff were not left out, as they both raised allegations and counter-accusations while the impasse lasted.

Contacted, the bank manager declined comments. Also, the officer in charge of the legal department of the financial institution, Sahiru Micah, also refused to speak, saying: “We did not invite the media.”
