Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State.

Governor Simon Lalong has approved the recall of over 2,000 teachers disengaged from service in 2013. Chairman of Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Prof. Matthew Sule, who made the disclosure yesterday at a news conference in Jos, said the affected were sacked for allegedly presenting unclassified certificates and failing to meet the minimum requirements for teaching in the state.

He added that the governor sanctioned the recall in line with his resolve to improve the educational sector and address the problem of shortage of teachers in public primary schools.

Sule listed the dismissed to include 519 teachers, 553 religious instructors and 945 whose appointments were terminated. He said: “Five hundred and nineteen teachers, dismissed for presenting unclassified certificates during the last biometric capturing, were pardoned. Those who have now obtained the minimum teaching qualification of National Certificate of Education (NCE) will be recalled and re-engaged.”Those that were unable to get additional qualifications, but had spent 10 years in service, will be retired with full benefits.

The SUBEB boss promised that the board would also recall the 945 teachers whose appointments were terminated on the strength of their inability to obtain NCE earlier.Sule added that his agency would extend same gesture to the 553 religious instructors who were not captured by biometrics. He advised the affected teachers to reciprocate government’s gesture through renewed dedication to duties.
