Police in Niger state cancel PDP rally

Nigeria Police

The Niger State Police Command has cancelled the zonal rally planned for Saturday by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It was slated to hold at Paiko, the headquarters of Paikoro Local Government Area of the state.

The PDP Vice Chairman in Zone B, Adamu Jibrin, disclosed this yesterday in Minna.

He said the police cited security reasons, especially as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) also planned to hold its unity rally the same day in Minna.

The zonal vice chairman said the police told them that they do not have enough personnel to provide security for both rallies at the same time.

The police also expressed concern that supporters of the two parties could clash as they converged from across the state.

“We wrote to the police since February 5, asking for permission to hold the rally. But, we only got their reply on Monday, telling us that the APC had already applied for the same date.

All attempts by our correspondent to get their reaction failed, as the Police Public Relations Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, refused to pick his calls.
