Two members of a robbery gang that opened fire on the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Division, Adeyinka Akingbade, have been arrested by operatives of Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) in Ogun State.

Akingbade was shot by the suspects when he led other policemen to arrest armed robbers who had invaded an hotel in Itele-Ijebu along Sagamu-Benin Expressway. The suspects reportedly ambushed the DPO and shot him severally at close range.

Spokesman of the Ogun State police command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said in a statement that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, on getting the report of the shooting, directed the FSARS team, led by Uba Adam, to go after the hoodlums and arrest them.

“The FSARS team swung into action immediately and their effort paid off after six hours when the hideout of the robbers was located. On sighting the policemen, the robbers engaged them in a gunbattle, which lasted about an hour.

“At the end of the encounter, two of the robbers – Wasiu Ganiyu and Azeez Komolafe – were arrested while the leader of the gang, simply known as Mungo Park was shot dead. Others escaped with bullet wound. Recovered from them are two AK47 riffles with 120 rounds of ammunition,” Abimbola said.

He added that the police boss, who was elated about the gallant display of FSARS men, appealed to members of the public, especially hospitals to report anybody seen with gunshot wound to the police. He also prayed for the quick recovery of the DPO, who he described as one of the best performing DPOs in the command.
