The Kano police command is set to withdraw all officers attached to individuals in the state.

Addressing officers and men at the police headquarters at the weekend, the Inspector General of Police, Idris Ibrahim said this decision was taken to refocus the mobile police unit in line with professional requirement.

The IGP, however, said there were plans to establish a Special Protection Unit (SPU) to replace the officers attached to personalities.

This move by the IGP is due to the shortage in the number of police personnel to handle the security challenges confronting the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Yusuf said Kano has only 7,967 officers despite its large population.

The IGP who was in Kano to launch the “Change Begins With Me” campaign said plans had been concluded to build separate barracks for mobile police officers.

He said Imo, Anambra and Niger states had agreed to provide structures and facilities for this initiative.

Lamenting the loss of over 1,000 officers to insurgency in Borno and Yobe states, Idris said the police would soon unveil an empowerment scheme to assist their families.

“We are planning to get shops for the widows of our officers who died in Borno, Yobe and other places. Apart from this, we are collaborating with estate surveyors and some foreign partners to build 55 housing units and hospitals. This will address the accommodation problems faced by officers.

“We are also looking into the pensions. The era of long delay before police officers collect their entitlement is over. We have changed the board of directors and trying to make it more effective and efficient.”

Rabiu informed the IGP that Kano was facing the challenge of kidnapping, cattle rustling and the recent crisis of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria. He appealed for the deployment of more officers to curb these crises.
