Rainstorm kills 12, destroys 500 houses in Katsina

No less than 12 people have lost their lives with more than 500 houses affected following a rainstorm in Katsina State.
Five people were reported to have sustained injuries while the rainstorm lasted.

Victims’ family members at Tudun En-Lihidda area in the state metropolis the deaths were confirmed by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), while rest confirmed six of to newsmen.

Residents have since buried the last six victims.

The rainstorm, which occurred on Thursday and lasted for about an hour, was the first the state would be witnessing since beginning of the rain season.

The Director-General of SEMA, Dr. Aminu Waziri at a press briefing said aside the 500 houses affected, several offices and classroom blocks were destroyed at the army barracks in the state.

Waziri said most of the displaced persons were taking refuge at Islamiyya schools close to their places of residence while others were staying at houses of good Samaritans.

He said the agency was still assessing the level of damage done by the rainstorm to quantify the emergency assistance needed by the victims.
