The Oko Royal family of Kula in Belema community, Akuku-Toru Local Council of Rivers has resolved to accelerate infrastructure and economic development in the area on its own.

It made the resolve after considering that it was abandoned since 37 years of oil and gas production in the area. The royal family, however, suspended their agent to Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) Nigeria Limited, Ibinabo Harry from interfacing between them and Shell, saying he failed in his responsibilities.

According to a statement by the family at the weekend and signed by its monarch, King Bourdillon Oko XXVIII, Harry’s suspension takes immediate effect. Also suspended in the meeting were one Reuben Loveday Alasi and Dabo George. The congress said the duo were suspended indefinitely and that they henceforth, cease to have dealings with the community and Shell.

Oko said the community had endured developmental difficulties for a long time due to Harry’s misrepresentation and now resolved to take their destiny in their own hands. Also, the women leader of the family, Mrs. Orlu Ekine and the youth leader of Belema community, Ipaliba Apamabo in their separate reactions backed the monarch decision and said the trio should desist from interfacing between the community and Shell.
