A group in the United States, the Alliance for Smile alongside Rotary International in partnership with the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) on Tuesday kicked off a free five-day surgery procedure and care for indigent patients with cleft lip and palate medical conditions.

Announcing the surgical mission, Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. David Adewale Oke, recalled previous missions by the group that had led to the success story of over 30 patients who benefited from previous operations.

The District Governor, Rotary International District 9110, Kola Shodipo, said emphasis would be placed on setting up facilities on cleft lip palate operations in any hospital that would be visited by the club in bringing succour to less privileged patients and also assist them in speech therapy.

Coordinator of the Rotary Club Cleft Lip/Palate Mission, Dr. Oladehinde Shoga, said the visiting team are in Nigeria to further cement the agreement between the parties by transferring medical skills to the consultants in Nigeria, as well as surgical intervention, general care and therapy for patients.

Dr. Stueber, who spoke on behalf of Alliance for Smiles, said though treatment of patients with such cases could be frustrating but all hands must be on desk to alleviate the situation by pledging the continued support of the organization to patients in Nigeria.
