The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that rotation of power guarantees “equity and social justice under the present democratic dispensation in the country.”

The shift of power in geo-political zones and senatorial districts are in conformity with the provision of 1999 Constitution.

Mohammed said this at the weekend while addressing stakeholders and political party stalwarts at a one-day leadership summit organised by Southern Borno Movement for Rotation of Power (SBMRP) in Maiduguri.

He said even though the summit is a historical event in Borno, the rotation of power among zones or regions and senatorial districts are anchored on the promotion of social justice and political inclusiveness.

According to him, several states in the country have adopted rotational power shift to guarantee the sustain equity, justice and fairness to the people.

Mohammed, represented by Director-General of National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr. Garba Abari, said: “Today’s summit, convened by Prof. Peter Lassa and Alhaji Ibrahim Usman, will not only guarantee equity and social justice to the people; but overcome challenges of national development in the state.”

In the same vein, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South Senatorial District at the National Assembly, said the people should fully co-operate to unite before power could be shifted to them.

He said shift of power in Borno State had been between the north and central districts for four decades.

He, therefore, warned that failure to unite among the various ethnic and religious groups, power will continue to remain in north and central parts of state.

Meanwhile, Hamza Bukar, in his goodwill message, said: “The leadership challenges in Borno State are critical for a shift of power to the south, as the 2019 gubernatorial elections draw nearer.

He noted that democracy is rooted in compromise and not conquest.

However, Governor Kashim Shettima, represented by Secretary to the State Government, Usman Jidda Shuwa, said shift of power to Southern Borno could impact positively on people’s lives.

He warned against political manipulation.
