Security agents rescue nine hostages, kill four robbers in Rivers

The Rivers State Police Command yesterday disclosed that it has rescued nine kidnap victims in different operations and killed four suspected armed robber in the state.

Its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, who made this known in Port Harcourt, said the nine rescued persons were abducted two weeks ago from a commercial bus in Ogba/Egbeme/Ndoni council area.

Its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nnamdi Omoni, who made this known in Port Harcourt, said the nine rescued persons were abducted two weeks ago from a commercial bus in Ogba/Egbeme/Ndoni council area.

Omoni said the Inspector General of Police Monitoring Unit led by Igwe Benneth had responded to a distress call in an estate near the University of Port Harcourt where an exchange of gunfire ensued during which the four robbers were killed.

He said on June 19, men of the Egbeda Divisional Anti- Crime patrol stormed a forest at Egbeda where kidnappers held nine passengers who were abducted on their way to Port Harcourt on June 16, 2017.

“They fired tear gas into the forest where the kidnappers were choked and confused thereby abandoning the victims who were rescued unhurt. They were dislodged and a manhunt was launched.

Omoni explained that on June 18, the IGP Monitoring Unit led by Benneth responded to a distress call of three armed-robbery gang who were robbing from flat to flat.
But, on sighting the Police, the robbers engaged them and in the ensued gun battle, three of the four robbers were killed while one escaped with gunshot wounds.

He said the Mini-Okoro Divisional Anti-Robbery Squad responded to a distress call that four armed robbers were robbing people after barricading the Old Aba Road. “On arriving the scene, the robbers engaged the Police in fierce shoot out but retaliation from the Police got one of them wounded. He was later identified as Ikechukwu aka Ezeke. He died on the way to the Hospital, he added.

He said several ammunition and guns were recovered during a combined raid by the IGP team, the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) and Anti-Kidnapping Unit against cultists, kidnappers and robbers in the state.
