TO combat insurgency and terrorism, a security expert at the weekend called on the Federal Government, with the co-operation of the National Assembly to consider community policing as an urgent solution to the twin problem.

Managing Director of Lahrivet, ‘Lanre Ajegbomogun, said at a security workshop that community policemen or sheriffs are closer to the people of their area or jurisdiction, so if any strange person comes into their neighbourhood, they can easily fish out the person or monitor him/her, to detect whether they have evil intention or not.

They can therefore, quickly nip in the bud their unholy scheme. While giving kudos to IGP Solomon Arase for the encouragement given to the officer who made bulletproof vest, Ajegbomogun however urged the IGP to revisit the bank robbery foiled by men of Area ‘G’ Ogba some years ago, so that they could be rewarded for the gallantry and bravery displayed by killing and getting some culprits arrested under the leadership of DCP Mobolaji Odesanya.”

Ajegbomogun, appealed to Nigerians: “Let us as a society learn how to report ourselves; this is the standard practice all over the world because criminals are not spirits, but the police can only work and perform creditably well on information.” “Also, the IGP and Federal Government should address the recurring and unending problem of proliferation of arms, aided and abetted by men of the customs service, who have failed to do their duty conscientiously.

The sophisticated arms used by insurgents and robbers were not manufactured here, it is due to our porous borders and we pray and hope that the new heads of the Nigeria Customs Service and Immigration will address this issue,” he added.
