Few days after members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at Auchi, a splinter group has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group, which was led by Mr. Usman Shagadi said at a rally at Auchi that the members, including the chairmen of 192 wards and their followers would work for the APC’s candidate, Godwin Obaseki.

This is coming after a former member of the House of Representatives, Abubakar Momoh had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with his SDP supporters.

Shagadi said: “We have no money to give to Governor Adams Oshiomhole, who is our son, brother and friend. This is how we shall pay him. As we are here, my members in the SDP, including the ward chairmen have resolved to join the APC.

“For the past two years, I have stayed in a house that is not my home. I have now come to my home. I want to announce that henceforth, I am no more a member of the SDP. I have now returned to my party which is the APC,” he said.

He assured Oshiomhole and the party’s candidate, Godwin Obaseki that they would receive the support of the former SDP members and ensure the party’s victory in the September 10 governorship polls.

Shagadi promised that apart from Auchi, the SDP members across the state would defect to the APC.

Receiving the new members, Oshiomhole said: “People may not understand why I am happy that Shagadi has returned. It is not only about winning the elections. Now that my tenure is coming to an end, for which I give thanks to God, to have our father back home to receive his son when he eventually finishes his work gives me endless joy.”

According to the governor, “When I look back at the end of my journey, I will still remain with my Daddy the way we started. By that, I will never be accused of being a son whom God elevated and then forgot his father.”

Momoh, who was SDP’s senatorial candidate in the 2015 elections, had promised at last week’s defection that he would make the entire SDP structure to support the PDP.
