Earlier, Oyindamola Abdulrazak helped the Avicenna female team beat Corona School, Agbara, 13-8 to win the trophy and also emerge as the female MVP for the second time.

Effortswill Private Academy, Ejigbo and Dansol High School, Agidingbi, won the third place games for the boys and girls events respectively.

Special guest of honour, Kenneth Oseyenum who was represented by his wife, Esther hailed Doregos Academy for initiating and sustaining the grassroots championship for schools in Lagos and Ogun states.

He lamented that sport activities are not given priority attention in the school curriculum.

He said, “Participating in sports is key element in the personality development of young people. Sports deserves as much sincerity and attention as any academic subject.

“Every school has sports embedded in its curriculum as they understand the importance of physical health and activity but the importance given to sports ends there. Many schools do not properly encourage students to participate in sporting events. Besides, parents add to the physical hindrance by not believing that this field can bring as much or even better chances of success than the academic field.”

He posited that since sporting activities enhances a sound mind, immunity and sound mental health; it should be given optimum recognition in the curriculum.

“I don’t believe that Physical Education classes should be taken just for the fun of it. Sports deserves as much sincerity and attention as any academic subject.

“It is the duty of schools to recognize this importance and develop a good curriculum so that both students and parents would take interest in the field.”

In her welcome address, the Head of School, Mr. Adebisi Adegbulugbe disclosed that the championship started in 2005.

“The founder, Mrs. Clementina Doregos, through divine inspiration and love for the young ones, created an avenue to foster good relationships among private schools and help discover the innate abilities in our youths.

“Many schools within and outside Lagos State have participated and won laurels. This 2018 edition started last year. Many schools were involved at the beginning but one after the other the men were separated from the boys; and the women from the girls. Today we have the best four schools to compete in the finals.”
