Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has approved the upgrading of six hospitals to premier health institutions, one in each of the three senatorial zones of the state.

He also said two general hospitals are to be renovated while the state leprosarium is to be converted to an infectious diseases hospital.

A statement by Tambuwal’s spokesman, Malam Imam Imam, said the governor spoke in Sokoto while addressing health stakeholders at the ongoing 56th annual conference of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).

According to the statement, the projects will be executed while government continues with its earlier plan to establish cardiac and renal centres to reduce the challenge confronting patients traveling out of the country for treatment.

He said in order to adequately preserve drugs and other items, the state government, in collaboration with USAID and other development agencies recently renovated and commissioned two blocks of storage facilities at the State Central Medical Stores.
