Teachers recruitment: El-Rufai kneels, begs appraisal teams to expose smuggled applicants
…Waives Tax For Teachers
Kaduna state governor, Nasir El-rufai yesterday went on his knees, begging appraisal teams responsible for conducting the final screening exercise for newly recruited teachers to fish out the smuggled applicants among them.
The teams will be deployed to the 23 local government areas of the state to conduct a final screening exercise for the teaching applicants. The state government had deployed a 3-man team made up of college lecturers, development partners and representatives of MDAs to each local government area of the state to conduct a final screening for successful candidates so as to ensure that only qualified and competent candidates find their way into the classrooms.
The governor who made the appeal during a meeting with the teams and other stakeholders ahead of their deployment to the various LGAs urged them to be fair and objective. He explained that reports alleged that names of some unqualified teachers, including those who failed the recruitment screening exercises have been smuggled into the final list of successful applicants. Thanking the teams for agreeing to be part of the process, he appealed to them to ensure no bad or unqualified teacher is found in the state’s education system.
“We have just waived the Pay as You Earn tax (PAYE) for teachers because we desire to pay teachers higher than other civil servants. We will also make teachers in the rural areas comfortable by providing accommodation and ease of transportation for them. All of these policies put in place will be of no use without quality teachers,” he stressed.
Earlier, the permanent member 1 of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mary Ambi explained that the teams would go to their allocated LGAs with the full list of candidates arranged in order of performance and list of schools with their needs to complete the appraisal process of 15,760 new teachers.
Also, the Commissioner for Education, Ja’afaru Sani said the final screening is aimed at filtering those who might have found their way into their list without the proper procedure.
