Tension in Imo, as villagers, herdsmen clash
Tension has enveloped Imo State, yesterday, following alleged skirmish between community members of Akokwa, in Ideato North Local Council of the state and suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The clash, which started the previous day, Friday, spilled over to Saturday and left some persons burnt to death, while others that sustained injuries are receiving treatment.
When The Guardian visited the scene of the crisis Saturday afternoon, several police officers, in hundreds, dispatched by the Commissioner of Police in the state, Taiwo Lakanu, had arrived the community, restoring law and order, even as charred bodies were seen littered in the bonfires.
It was gathered that youths thoroughly frisked every vehicle that plied the route to ascertain their identity.
According to a source, the clash started when story filtered into the community that an aged woman of the community, who had gone to farm, was raped to death by suspected herdsmen, leading to the alleged rampage.
