Tiv community raises alarm over plan to disenfranchise IDPs in Taraba
The Tiv community has raised an alarm of plan to bar Internally-Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Taraba State from participating in the 2019 general polls.
The Tiv, led by President-General of the Tiv Cultural and Social Association, Chief Goodman Daniel Dahida, alleged that “some prominent persons in the hinterlands of the state are working seriously round the clock to disenfranchise IDPs and IDP returnees because of their vulnerability.”
The group, which made this known to journalists yesterday in Jalingo, the state capital, said all efforts to make available to IDP camps voters’ registration machines so as to participate in the ongoing registration exercise had proved abortive.
Meanwhile, the Acting Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Mahmmad Umar Madagali, said the commission did not instruct any of its members of staff, especially those handling the current registration of voters “to treat any prospective registrant on the basis of religion, ethnic or political inclinations.”
