Medical consultants and resident doctors in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH) have embarked on an indefinite strike in protest of the kidnap of their colleague, Alex Akani.

Also, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State has threatened protest the kidnap of the state vice chairman and secretary of Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JSUN) and five other persons by unknown gunmen.

The consultants at the university of Port Harcourt, who rarely go on strike, commenced an indefinite industrial action to denounce the kidnap of Akani and Bobmauel Clark in Port Harcourt.

Akani was kidnapped at his home last week, while Clark, was whisked away by gunmen. They are yet to regain their freedom.

Hundreds of patients who visited UPTH for routine medical checks and other appointments were stranded, as there were no doctors to attend to them.

The Guardian checks revealed that worst hit were the departments of surgery and pediatrics.

Those who were booked for surgery yesterday were sent back home due to the strike.

Spokesperson of Medical and Dental Consultants of the UPTH, Chukwuemeka Agi, said resident doctors joined the consultants in solidarity.

He, however, explained that doctors in line with their oath of service have decided to offer service for emergency cases if and when they arise.
