Energy official killed in Dominican Republic
HOODED gunmen broke into the home of the Dominican Republic’s deputy mining minister, shooting him dead and wounding his son, police said Saturday.
Victoriano Santos Hilario, 49, was killed late Friday during the home invasion in Cotui, Sanchez Ramirez province, 110 kilometers (70 miles) northwest of Santo Domingo.
“The wife of the official who was murdered… Zoila Maria Gutierrez, told authorities three hooded men carried out the crime,” a police statement said, adding that the suspects fled in a gray car.
The deputy minister was treated for gunshot wounds outside the home and died there, while his son, 20-year-old Victor Manuel Santos Gutierrez, was shot in the side and rushed to a hospital in the capital, officials said.
Santos Hilario’s Dominican Liberation Party called for the killers to face “due punishment.”
The motive of the crime, under police investigation, was not immediately clear.
