OAU students’ union leaders’ alleged N2.5m fraud
Sir: Coming not as a surprise in the waves of allegations of various atrocities perpetrated under the erstwhile Omotayo Akande-led
Students’ Union administration of the Obafemi Awolowo University is an allegation from the Vice Dean of the Division of Students Affairs in the university, Dr. B.S Afolabi of an unaccounted for N2.5 million given to the students union by the university.
Speaking over the weekend in a programme titled, “Great Ife Students’Summit,” Afolabi asserted that the N2.5 million given out to the university Students’ Union administration sinks out of sight without anything to show for it.
Reacting to the assertion, the erstwhile Financial Secretary of the Students’ Union who is currently a part 5 student of the Department of Electronics and Electrical Engineering, Olajide Adeyanju Ayodeji said the allegation was a lie. He further said the union just received N2 million and N1.5 million in two different occasions.
However, students of the university have taken to their various social media account to express their opinions on the revelation: “Imagine! We are doing what we are accusing the management of doing – pilfering and playing with public funds” – Mbah.
“Gurumaraji N6 million scam, scholarship turns scholar-thief saga,1.8 million naira phone call budget and another 200 thousand naira case;are they the only one!” – Lawal.
“Auto-spending youths all around and we are preaching the gospel of New Nigeria”- Silasito.“I heard of the recovered properties that was kept in the office of then suspended Students’ Union president that didn’t use more than three weeks before disappearing; Imagine! Let EFCC and ICPC look into this issue” – Brave Heart.
“Ever known for its intellectual approaches to issues ranging from oppressions to bad governance at the local, national and international level over the decades is Great Ife Students’ Union, but it is pitiable that the present crops of leaders most especially in the last two years have turned the union to a puppet in the hand of the university management, a paper-head tiger and a noise making sect of people just after money, power, fame and CV! We need revival and refinement”- B. Williams.
“As we would have new set of leaders, it is important to know that the sanctity of the union lies in her ability to ensure transparency and integrity, that way, no one would oppress the union or win against the united voice” – Larrysam.
