Political calculations ahead of the September 22, 2018 governorship election in Osun State recorded a twist yesterday as the two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rivals, Senator Nurudeen Ademola Adeleke and Akin Ogunbiyi, got reconciled in Abuja.

At a crowded reconciliatory meeting convened by President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, who is also the chairman of Osun governorship campaign committee, Adeleke and Ogunbiyi signed an agreement to work together for the success of the party in the election.

Saraki told journalists after the meeting that the reconciliation was important for the PDP.

He expressed happiness that the PDP’s two foremost leaders in Osun who struggled against each other to secure the ticket of the party for the election had become united.

“What just happened is the signing of agreement between not just the two aspirants of the Osun gubernatorial primaries of PDP, but between all the PDP stakeholders in the state.

A lot of people had thought they could not come together. Today what you are seeing is the unity of the PDP in Osun State.

The two aspirants who contested in an intensive primary are now together in one finally, so that we will be able to present a united party for the forthcoming election,” Saraki said.

Ogunbiyi said he was very “delighted that things got to this point”, adding that it was in the interest of the Osun people and Nigeria at Large.

“We believe Osun must be taken, for us to be able to wrestle power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) come 2019. We are going to work together for the party’s victory in the gubernatorial election,” Ogunbiyi said.

To Adeleke, God has answered PDP’s prayer. “For us, the PDP victory is assured. By the grace of God, we are going to win the gubernatorial election.

We thank the leadership of the PDP, especially the senate president, who is the chairman of our national campaign committee, and all our party leaders to have organized this.

“The electorate are waiting for us, I believe that they want us and this is what they have been waiting for.

After primary, there should be reconciliation. And with this reconciliation, everybody is happy, the electorate are waiting for us and sure victory is ours.”
